Abstract
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology into education has become an inseparable part of online education transforming the landscape of the higher education, which has provided a chance to experience flexible learning patterns according to personal needs, individualized and optimized instruction strategies and more effective and purposeful student involvement. Knowing how such technologies evolve in institutions with increasing implementation of AI-driven platforms is therefore critical to strategic and long-term planning. This paper aims at examining the effects of AI in the advancement of online learning in higher education, including the following aspects; improvements of outcomes, compliance with the issues of diversity and pluralism, and engaging changes of roles and responsibilities of teachers. The research seeks to answer key questions such as: To what extent does AI enhance students’ participation and learning achievement in online higher education? When and how can AI teaching and learning applications be enhanced, and what are the challenges for using AI in online learning settings? The integration of AI in higher education could possibly give rise to what sorts of future possibilities? In order to answer these questions, this study applies a multimethod approach, based on literature review, developing scenarios for envisioning future state, and qualitative data analysis to design the future of AI supported online learning. The study indicates that, on one hand, AI holds a lot of promise for improving online learning but on the other hand there are potential issues with regard to ethics, data privacy, and the ability/perception of students to get an equitable and quality online educational opportunity. The research suggests that the guidelines should be created to promote the fair and appropriate integration of AI into education. In addition, it offers implications on how educations institutions and policy makers can prepare for or respond to the four changes outlined above that is being ushered in through the adoption of AIS in higher learning institutions. Collectively, these findings help advance knowledge about the relevance and direction of AI for future developments in online learning.
