Restoring the Queen City’s Legacy: Why Build a Sports Museum in Buffalo?

Alexandra M. Dwyer

Buffalo, New York, is a community of, endlessly devoted sports fans. Although the city has declined in population for various reasons, sports still remain a constant for the city’s survival. My research paper will answer the following questions: How do sports team help create regional identity? Why is sports culture important to this American city? Why build a sports museum in Buffalo? How will a museum add to the city of Buffalo’s revitalization project? My research includes case studies, testimonials, and a survey using the opinions of fans as a method to answer my thesis question. I argue that building a sports museum will benefit the city and its community. Buffalo needs a physical reminder of how its professional sports culture supported the city in the past and how it can aid the city’s revitalization process in the present.
