World Line and Narrative Realism
Abstract
Crafting a captivating and believable narrative is a difficult task. To aid in the attempt, writers created ad-hoc “rules” – which are often successfully violated. We present an alternative from ecological psychology: the World Line. The World Line is the set of events and affordances which collectively constitute the entire narrative of a person’s life. To be successful, the Narrative must be fully contained within the World Line. This framework explains not only the existence of both the rules and the successful violations, it can also help clarify which events to include and which to exclude from a narrative.
